Who is Savy Outsider?
Pronunciation- savvy like tech-savvy | Pronouns- they/she
I am a Black and Persian/neurodivergent/bisexual/nonbinary femme/survivor. I am a 3rd generation Californian on my mother’s side and a first generation American on my father’s side. As a third generation Black Californian my maternal great grandmother planted roots to build safety with her husband in the midst of systematic shaking. Their Baha’i roots trace back a lineage of resilience as my paternal grandmother had to escape her home and leave behind family in two different countries to survive. The strengthening lessons of my ancestors created the flexibility and joy I am able to thrive in. The relationships my ancestors cultivated provided them protection through sometimes dire circumstances. The consistency of supportive relationships is a through line in my becoming. My ambitions and goals are built from the evolution of my ancestors' sacrifice.
Beyond and because of my history I am a multi-method researcher and a multi-medium artist. I have been within the research world for almost a decade and explored a variety of disciplines. Currently, I am a community researcher exploring quantitative analysis, oral histories, archival explorations, and more. My research often melts into their artistry and I finds the best projects are produced when I bring those worlds together. As an artist I utilize ceramics, digital drawing, collaging, essays, and poetry to express my emotions. I have been writing poetry for over ten years and my work explores nature, personification, imagery, and the body. I often write queer erotic poetry and reclaims love poems as a form of resistance through joy. Additionally, my writing expresses how emotions feel in the body, survival, and existing in multitudes. My writings have appeared in a couple academic journals including “Siyabonana: The Journal of Africana Studies.” I also have community-oriented domestic violence education reports published through my job. Lastly, my poetry has been shared through personal and community zines.
